How to Sell Your Phone Safely Online in Rwanda

Selling a phone online in Rwanda is quick when you do it right. Good photos and an honest description attract serious buyers; meeting safely and insisting on payment before handover protect you. Here is how to do it from start to finish.

Take clear, honest photos

Good photos are the single biggest driver of enquiries. Use natural daylight, clean the screen and back cover, and photograph all four sides plus the phone powered on (showing a clean home screen). If there are scratches, cracks or scuffs, photograph those too.

Hiding defects wastes everyone's time — buyers who discover undisclosed issues in person will either walk away or push hard to renegotiate the price. Honesty upfront filters out time-wasters and builds trust with serious buyers.

Write an accurate description

Include: brand and exact model name, storage capacity, colour, overall condition (new / like new / good / fair), battery health if you know it, and what is included in the sale (original charger, box, earphones). The more specific you are, the fewer unnecessary messages you will receive.

State your location clearly — buyers in Kigali often prefer not to deal with sellers in Musanze or Rubavu unless delivery is available, so being upfront saves both parties time.

Price it fairly

Search RAY Markets for the same model to see what other sellers are asking. Price slightly above your minimum acceptable amount to leave room to negotiate — most buyers will make an offer. If your phone is in particularly good condition or still has a warranty, note that explicitly to justify your price.

For high-value phones (above RWF 200,000), a recent purchase receipt or a screenshot of the original invoice adds credibility and supports a higher asking price.

Meet safely in person

Arrange to meet in a busy, well-lit public place — a cafe, a petrol station forecourt, or inside a shopping mall. Avoid meeting at your home for a first transaction, and never go alone to an isolated or poorly lit location.

Good public meetup spots in Kigali include Century Park, Kigali Heights mall, Simba Supercentre and main-road petrol stations on KN or KG avenue. In Musanze, Rubavu or Huye, town centres and hotel lobbies work well.

Get paid before handing over the phone

In Rwanda, MTN Mobile Money and Airtel Money are the safest instant payment methods. Request the transfer while you are both present, wait for the confirmation SMS to arrive on your phone, then hand over the device. Do not hand over the phone while the transfer is pending.

For expensive phones, check your account balance — not just the incoming notification — to confirm the amount has cleared before completing the handover.
