What should I check before buying a used car in Rwanda?

Ask for the original logbook (carte rose) and match the chassis number to the car, then confirm with the Rwanda Revenue Authority (RRA) that there are no outstanding taxes or ownership disputes. Inspect in daylight with a trusted mechanic — check for rust, past accident repairs, and that all electronics work — before agreeing a price.

Do I have to pay import duty on a used car?

If the car has not been fully cleared through customs, the buyer becomes liable for any outstanding import duty — often 25–35% of the CIF value. Confirm the status with RRA before agreeing a price, and note that cars older than 12 years cannot legally be imported into Rwanda.

Is it free to list my car on RAY Markets?

Yes — posting a car listing is completely free. Add photos, the price in RWF, mileage and your district, and buyers across Rwanda can contact you directly with no agent commission.
